Webinar Abstract

Title: Creating A Lean Organisational Structure

Date: Wednesday, 17th November 2010

Time: 14:15 GMT

This will be about understanding and sharing the learnings from UBUK that Bhadar Singh has been through during the last five years. It will chart how the process was begun and the key players who introduced the world of Lean to UB. It will also highlight the need for each organisation to structure the programme to suit their cultural and business needs.

The point will be emphasised that having the right people at the right levels plays a vital role in the success or failure of implementing a successful lean programme. The need to ensure that in order to adopt the approach clear guidance and direction needs to be delivered from the very top of the organisation. The emphasis will be very much on the Leaders leading by example and facilitating change. The point of educating those leaders, at all levels, giving them the ability to coach and mentor effectively i.e. a standard approach by all and a clear link of how the training provided links to the UBUK Lean Way.  Following on from this is the approach taken to cascade this to all parts of the organisation with particular empahasis on enagaging the functions outside manufacturing i.e. Entrerprise level and the key role this plays in ensuring the on going success of the process.

Finally it will also emphasise the need to regurlarly review the approach as the organisation 'Matures' to ensure it is relevant and up to date not only with current organsiational requirements but also market tens but more importantly Consumer and customer requirements.

We first engaged in adopting Lean principles some 4 to 5 years ago. During this time whilst actively encouraging the approach, it was not a key part of the approach adopted by UB Exec. However as with most if not all organisations the impact of the credit crunch and the shift in focus by the customer and consumer, from branded to price i.e. more for less meant that UB needed to change their approach. This meant that the need to further reduce costs in all parts of the organisation whilst maintaining a quality product and service was now seen as a must in order to ensure UB as a brand continued to be valued.

This required a step change and began by the appointment of a Lean Director to enable buy in at the highest level. The next phase was to define what would be UB UK Lean Way and to improve the base from which this would be delivered and hence the engagement of a Group Lean Controller to provide support and guidance to the organisation
